Baseball legend Babe Ruth’s almost a century-old jersey has yet against created the world record for sports most expensive memorabilia.

The jersey Ruth would wear for New York Yankees between 1928 and 1930 has fetched $ 5.64 million (₹ 39.43 crore) at an auction at the Yankees Stadium on Saturday, Hunt Auctions have announced.

The deal broke the previous world record for the highest bid for a sports memorabilia – $ 4.4 million. Incidentally, the previous record also stood in Ruth’s named for his another jersey from 1020.

Hunt Auctions has shared the record deal at their official website @HuntAuctions. “The Babe it still breaking records! Jersey worn by @mlb and @Yankees icon Babe Ruth c. 1928-30 sets a world record price of $5,640,000 for any piece of sports memorabilia!! “While the record-setting prices attained today are certainly astonishing, I am not surprised at all given the incredible materials and the mythical status the Babe holds in the history of this country,” Hunt Auctions president David Hunt said in a press release.

Hunt Auctions had organised the auction on Saturday in partnership with Ruth’s family. There were 400 Ruth belongings up for grabs.

Ruth remains among baseball’s all-time greats, having hit a then-record 714 home runs over a career that spanned from 1914-35 and included four World Series titles. He also held the single-season home run record from 1927 to 1961.

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go for charity, Ruth’s granddaughter Linda Ruth Tosetti has said in a Press statement.
