It is not new for Haryana Government and sports department officials to frustrate athletes with the policies. In a latest move, the State has decided to cut the prize money of the athletes from Haryana who had won medals at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games last year.

Frustrated athletes have slammed the Haryana Government for backing out from what it had promised to the athletes.

The State after amending its cash award policy has slashed the cash prizes of top athletes like World No. 1 wrestler and Asian Games gold medallist Bajrang Punia. Fellow Asian Games champion wrestler Vinesh Phogat too has received a reduced prize money.

Both the wrestlers have responded strongly over the Government move. Punia said athletes would not trust the Government that did not stick to its promises. Viensh said that no athlete is happy with the government policy, national daily Indian Express has reported. Both the athletes have taken to Twitter for expressing their frustration.

The prize money “in accordance with the policy” has been reduced because of multiple medals wins during the same financial year. According to the new sports policy, “In case a sportsperson wins more than one medal during a financial year, he/she will receive full award money for the highest medal and at 50 per cent of the award money for the second and subsequent medals.”

Last week, Haryana government had cancelled the cash awards function for 3,000 State players, saying the prize money would be transferred to their bank accounts by June 25.

The day money is transferred, Punia and Vinesh had tweeted to slam the Government for reducing the prize money from what was committed to the atheltes.
